The oldest confirmed pyramid in Egypt is the Step Pyramid of Djoser, built around 2630 BCE.
Before this, Egyptian kings were buried in flat, mud-brick tombs called mastabas. But around 4,700 years ago, a king named Djoser wanted something grander. His brilliant architect, Imhotep, had a wild idea. He stacked six of these flat tombs on top of each other, each one smaller than the last. This created a giant stone stairway to the sky. It stood over 200 feet tall, making it the first massive stone building in human history.
The Red Pyramid, built around 2600 BCE, was the world's very first true, smooth-sided pyramid.
While Djoser's pyramid looked like a giant staircase, Egyptians soon wanted smooth, straight walls. They tried and failed a few times, but finally succeeded with the Red Pyramid of King Sneferu. Completed around 4,600 years ago, it set the standard for all the famous pyramids that came later, including the Great Pyramid of Giza. It proved that builders had mastered the math and engineering needed to make massive, perfectly sloped stone mountains.
Around the same time Egypt built its first pyramid, people in Peru were building similar structures in the ancient city of Caral.
We often think pyramids only belong to Egypt, but ancient humans on the other side of the world had the same idea. Between 2700 and 2600 BCE, people in the Supe Valley of Peru built up to 20 pyramid-like structures. This city, called Caral, is widely seen as the oldest city in the Americas. Because dating old stone is hard, we cannot say for sure who built theirs first, but both cultures reached for the sky at almost the exact same time.

Scientific View
From an engineering view, the pyramid shape is a natural solution to a simple physical limit. If you want to build something incredibly tall using only heavy stones and gravity, you must make the base wider than the top. Otherwise, the structure collapses under its own weight. Ancient builders across the globe did not necessarily copy each other. Instead, they all discovered the same basic rule of physics: to reach the clouds with stone, you must build a pyramid.
