Before this, Egyptian kings were buried in flat, mud-brick tombs called mastabas. But around 4,700 years ago, a king named Djoser wanted something grander. His brilliant architect, Imhotep, had a wild idea. He stacked six of these flat tombs on top of each other, each one smaller than the last. This created a giant stone stairway to the sky. It stood over 200 feet tall, making it the first massive stone building in human history.
