The US military initially announced they had captured a 'flying disc' before quickly changing their story to a weather balloon.
In July 1947, a rancher named Mac Brazel found strange debris on his land in New Mexico. He showed it to the local sheriff, who called the nearby army airfield. The military got excited and put out a press release saying they found a 'flying disc.' The next day, they changed their minds. They showed reporters pieces of rubber and foil, claiming it was just a normal weather balloon.
Declassified military documents show the crash was actually a secret spy balloon from Project Mogul.
In 1994, the US Air Force released a big report. It showed that the debris came from Project Mogul. This was a highly secret Cold War project. The military linked together long trains of balloons carrying special microphones. They floated these high in the sky to listen for the sound of Soviet atomic bomb tests. One of these balloon trains went missing nearby just before the crash.
