Funds from the weapons sales to Iran were secretly diverted to support the Contra rebels in Nicaragua.
Money made from selling arms to Iran was secretly used to finance the Contras, a rebel group fighting the socialist Sandinista government in Nicaragua. This funding was illegal because Congress had prohibited U.S. support for the Contras.
President Ronald Reagan was not directly charged with wrongdoing, but investigations found he created conditions that allowed the scandal to happen.
Investigations concluded that Reagan was not directly involved in the illegal activities, but his hands-off approach and trust in his advisers allowed the secret operations to take place without his full knowledge.
