Mainstream Christianity teaches that God created the physical universe out of nothing and declared it to be good.
Mainstream Christians believe in a concept called 'creation from nothing.' According to their holy texts, a loving God spoke the entire physical world into existence. Because God made it, everything in nature—from the dirt to our physical bodies—is completely good. Even though things can go wrong, the physical world itself is still seen as a beautiful gift from God.
Gnostics believed the material world is evil and was created by an inferior, ignorant deity called the demiurge.
Gnostics had a very different view of our world. They believed that spirit is good, but all physical matter is bad. In their stories, our physical universe was not made by the true, supreme God. Instead, a lower, foolish creator called the demiurge built it. This lower creator trapped tiny sparks of divine light inside human bodies, making the physical world a prison we need to escape.
Gnostics taught that salvation comes from secret, internal knowledge rather than external rescue through faith.
For mainstream Christians, rescue comes from the outside through faith in Jesus. But Gnostics believed that salvation is an inside job. They taught that people are saved by uncovering secret, hidden wisdom called 'gnosis.' This secret knowledge acts like an alarm clock. It wakes up the divine spark inside you, helping your spirit break free from your physical body and return to the spiritual realm.
