New calculations by cosmologists suggest dark energy is not a permanent fixture. Its outward push might weaken. In about 11 billion years, this push could stop. Then, gravity will take the wheel, pulling all matter back together in a massive cosmic reversal.
In the absence of a collapse, the universe will experience a Big Freeze where even black holes eventually evaporate.
