The US military built Area 51 in 1955 specifically to test the secret U-2 spy plane.
In 1955, the US government set up the base near Groom Lake, a dry lake bed in the Nevada desert. They needed a hidden place to test the U-2, a high-altitude spy plane designed to fly over the Soviet Union. For decades, the government kept the base a complete secret. They only officially admitted it existed in 2013 after a public records request.
Cold War engineers used Area 51 to secretly study and fly captured Soviet fighter jets.
Declassified files show that Area 51 was not just for American planes. The military used it to test captured enemy technology. Under secret projects with names like HAVE DOUGHNUT and HAVE DRILL, US pilots flew Soviet MiG-17 and MiG-21 fighter jets. They wanted to find the weaknesses of these enemy planes so American pilots could beat them in combat.
Virtually every modern US stealth aircraft was developed and tested at Area 51.
The base served as a giant laboratory for radar-evading technology. Engineers used mathematical formulas from a Russian scientist to design shapes that radar could not see. From the early A-12 spy plane to the angular F-117 Nighthawk, every major American stealth plane was tested in the Nevada desert. The strange shapes and lights of these secret flights are what likely started the local UFO rumors.
