The INFJ personality type, often called the Advocate, is one of the rarest of the sixteen Myers‑Briggs types. People with this type tend to be quiet, thoughtful, and guided by a strong inner sense of what is right. They feel a deep pull to help others and to make the world a better place, often through creative or caring work. INFJs combine introversion with intuition, feeling, and judging. They recharge by spending time alone, prefer big‑picture ideas over concrete details, make choices based on personal values, and like to have plans rather than act on impulse. This mix gives them a unique mix of insight, empathy, and determination. Though they make up only about two percent of the population, INFJs have left a noticeable mark on history and culture. Figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Martin Luther King Jr. are often cited as examples of the Advocate’s blend of idealism and action.
“The INFJ makes up only about 2 out of every 100 people, yet many of history’s most admired changemakers share this rare type.”

Research using the Myers‑Briggs Type Indicator shows that the INFJ type is the least common among men and the third least common among women. This rarity contributes to the feeling many INFJs have of being different or misunderstood.
According to the Myers‑Briggs framework, INFJs gain energy from being alone, focus on patterns and future possibilities, make choices based on personal values and empathy, and prefer planned, organized approaches to life.
Descriptions of the Advocate highlight their ability to understand deep emotions, their strong moral compass, and their drive to contribute to the greater good, often through counseling, writing, or creative work.
A study of 50 professionals found that Extraversion and Intuition positively predict the ‘Driving Onward’ team role, whereas Sensing predicts the ‘Delivering Plans’ role. This shows how personality preferences can shape group contributions.
Many Advocates describe themselves as easily hurt by harsh feedback and as setting high standards for themselves, which can lead to stress or self‑criticism when those standards are not met.

From a scientific standpoint, the Myers‑Briggs Type Indicator is a self‑report questionnaire that sorts people into sixteen types based on four dichotomies. Research shows mixed evidence on its reliability and validity, but many practitioners find it useful for self‑reflection and career guidance. Studies linking MBTI types to team roles, like the one from the Western Cape, suggest modest predictive power for certain work behaviors.
