The fly exposes a human bias: we often measure ability using the scale of our own bodies. Seven kilometres per hour sounds unimpressive until the animal is navigating walls, ceilings and sudden threats with a nervous system built for rapid decisions. From the fly’s perspective, the room may not be slow, but it is richly packed with fleeting signals. Speed is not one number. It is a way of inhabiting time.
