Philosophers ask if a machine can ever truly "know" its own mind. True metacognition requires a sense of self. It needs an "I" that experiences doubt and feels the weight of responsibility. An AI might calculate probabilities and print "I am 60% sure," but this is just math. It is not the lived experience of hesitation. Without a subjective inner life, artificial metacognition may always be a clever imitation.
