Pessimistic (Rare Earth Hypothesis) perspective

While simple microbial life might be common, the conditions required for complex, multicellular, and especially intelligent life are extremely rare. Earth's unique combination of a stable orbit, large moon, plate tectonics, magnetic field, and a 'just right' star might be an exceptionally rare confluence, making complex life a cosmic anomaly.
