Type 1 diabetes results from the body’s inability to produce insulin due to immune system attack on pancreatic cells.

In Type 1 diabetes, the immune system mistakenly destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This leaves the body with little to no insulin, making blood sugar control impossible without insulin injections or pumps. This form often begins in childhood or adolescence but can appear at any age.
