A European swallow flies at a normal cruising speed of about 24 miles per hour.

Scientists figured this out by studying how birds fly in special wind tunnels. They looked at how fast the birds flap and how far they move with each flap. It turns out a normal, empty European swallow moves at around 11 meters per second. That is about 24 miles per hour.
