Some historians and political scientists point out that blaming every failure of 1960s activism on the FBI is an oversimplification. While COINTELPRO did massive damage, many activist groups already had deep internal disagreements, money problems, and leadership clashes. It is easy to blame a giant government conspiracy for everything that went wrong. However, social movements are messy, and many would have struggled or split up even without the FBI's secret interference.
