Some desert sand comes from ancient river and lake beds that dried up.

Rivers carry sediments including sand from mountain areas to lower lands. When water evaporates or rivers dry up, the sand stays behind. Ancient lakes that once filled desert basins have left thick layers of sand and salt. These dried lake beds can be a major source of sand in deserts today.
