Gravitational waves, ripples in spacetime caused by accelerating masses, have been directly detected.

Predicted by general relativity, these waves carry energy and travel at the speed of light. Their direct detection by LIGO in 2015, originating from merging black holes, provided powerful new evidence and opened a new window for observing the universe.
