The Virgo Cluster contains 1,277 catalogued member galaxies.
94% confidence
Far beyond Virgo’s familiar stars lies the Virgo Cluster, a vast gathering of galaxies that includes the giant elliptical galaxy Virgo A, also known as M87. A major catalog listed 2,096 galaxies in the surrounding area, identifying 1,277 as cluster members, 574 as possible members, and 245 as background galaxies. Virgo is therefore more than a pattern in the Milky Way’s sky: it is also a doorway toward a crowded region of the extragalactic universe.
