Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day.

Many people get these two holidays confused. Mexico actually declared its independence from Spain on September 16, 1810. That was more than 50 years before the Battle of Puebla ever happened. In Mexico, September 16 is the massive national holiday where schools and offices close. May 5 is a relatively minor day on the national calendar.
