Meaning is not an objective quality of physical items or events, but a relationship generated between a perceiver and the world.

We often look for meaning as if it were a physical trait, like height or weight. But meaning requires two parts: an observer and the observed. A poem has no single, fixed meaning on its own. It only gains meaning when a human reads it and connects with it. In the same way, life's meaning is a relationship we actively create.
