Following its release, City of God inspired a TV series (City of Men), a 2013 documentary 'City of God – 10 Years Later', and a 2024 miniseries 'City of God: The Fight Rages On'.

The success of the film led to several spin‑offs that revisit the same setting and characters. City of Men, a television series that premiered in 2002, follows a new generation of youths in the favela and was later adapted into a feature film in 2007. In 2013, a documentary reunited the original cast and crew to examine how their lives had changed a decade after the movie’s premiere. Most recently, in August 2024, a miniseries titled City of God: The Fight Rages On debuted, set two decades after the events of the original film. It explores the lingering impact of the drug trade and the ongoing struggle for peace in the community, showing how the story of Cidade de Deus continues to evolve.
