The United Kingdom has controlled the Falkland Islands almost continuously since 1833.

The UK first claimed the Falkland Islands in the 17th century and established a settlement in 1765. Though there were brief periods of French, Spanish, and Argentine presence, Britain reasserted control in 1833 and has governed the islands since then, except for a short occupation by Argentina in 1982. The British government bases its claim on continuous, peaceful administration and the islanders' right to self-determination.
