The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo triggered the outbreak of World War I.

On June 28, 1914, Bosnian Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip shot and killed the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne and his wife. The attackers wanted to end Austro-Hungarian rule in the region. Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia for the attack, setting off a rapid sequence of events known as the July Crisis that quickly escalated into full-scale war.
