Argentina claims the Falkland Islands were inherited from Spain when it gained independence in 1816.

Argentina argues that when it became independent from Spain, it took over the territories Spain once controlled in the region, including the Falklands. Argentina sees the British control since 1833 as an illegal occupation. The Argentine government has maintained this claim for nearly two centuries and even went to war with the UK over the islands in 1982.
